Health and Safety policy
Health and Safety Policy for Man with Van Blackheath
Man with Van Blackheath is committed to providing a professional, reliable and safe removal service. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to protecting our staff, customers, visitors and members of the public while we carry out moving and transportation services. We aim to comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised best practices for the removals industry.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our main objectives are to prevent injury, ill health and property damage arising from our activities. We seek to maintain safe working conditions in vehicles, customer premises, storage areas and any other locations where we operate. We continually look for opportunities to improve our standards and reduce risks associated with lifting, carrying, driving, loading and unloading.
Management Responsibilities
Management is responsible for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. This includes assessing risks, providing clear instructions and allocating appropriate resources. Management will ensure that staff understand their responsibilities, have the necessary training and equipment, and know how to report hazards or incidents. Regular reviews of working methods and safety performance will be carried out to keep this policy effective and up to date.
Employee Responsibilities
Every member of staff has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must follow all safety procedures, use equipment correctly, and cooperate with management in implementing this policy. Staff are expected to report hazards, near misses, incidents and any health or safety concerns without delay so that appropriate action can be taken.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We carry out risk assessments for activities typically involved in our removal services, including manual handling, working in customers homes or premises, driving and operating in public areas. These assessments help us identify potential hazards, evaluate risks and introduce control measures. Staff are trained in safe systems of work appropriate to their role, including the correct methods for lifting and carrying items, using trolleys and equipment, and securing loads in vehicles.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a core part of our work and is managed with particular care. We aim to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable by planning jobs carefully, using mechanical aids and ensuring adequate staffing levels. When manual lifting is necessary, staff are required to follow safe handling techniques, avoid overreaching or twisting, and ask for assistance when an item is too heavy or awkward. No employee is expected to lift an item that they consider unsafe to handle.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
Our vehicles are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition, with regular inspections and servicing. Drivers must hold the appropriate licence, adhere to road traffic laws, and follow safe driving practices at all times. Loads must be evenly distributed and properly secured to prevent movement during transit. Drivers are required to plan routes with safety in mind, allow sufficient time for journeys, and avoid working when tired or unfit to drive.
Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
We provide suitable equipment for moving goods, such as trolleys, straps and blankets, to protect both staff and customer property. Where necessary, personal protective equipment such as gloves or safety footwear is provided and must be used as instructed. All equipment will be inspected and maintained so that it remains safe and fit for purpose. Defective equipment must be reported immediately and taken out of use until repaired or replaced.
Working at Customer Premises
When working in customer homes or business premises, our staff will act with care and consideration. We aim to keep walkways clear, manage trip hazards such as loose cables or packing materials, and handle items in a way that minimises risk to people and property. Staff will take particular care on stairs, in confined spaces and when moving large or fragile items. Where possible, we will agree safe access routes with the customer before work begins.
Public Safety and Site Protection
Many of our removals take place in residential streets and busy public areas. We take reasonable steps to protect the public during loading and unloading, including careful vehicle positioning, maintaining clear pedestrian access where possible and remaining vigilant for passers-by. Staff are instructed not to leave items or equipment where they could cause obstruction or injury. Any spills or debris will be dealt with promptly and responsibly.
Training, Supervision and Communication
All staff receive appropriate induction and ongoing training relevant to their roles and the risks they may encounter. This includes training on manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety and emergency procedures. New or less experienced workers are supervised as needed until they are competent in their duties. We promote open communication about health and safety, encouraging staff to share suggestions and raise concerns.
Incident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. We will investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. Where appropriate, lessons learned will be shared with staff to prevent recurrence and improve working practices. Records of incidents and investigations will be kept and reviewed as part of our ongoing safety management.
Wellbeing and Fitness for Work
We recognise that the physical nature of removal work can be demanding. Staff are encouraged to look after their health, stay hydrated and take appropriate rest breaks. Employees must not work under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when unfit for work due to illness or fatigue. Any medical conditions that might affect safe working should be discussed confidentially with management so that reasonable adjustments can be considered.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
Man with Van Blackheath is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated in line with changes in legislation, industry guidance or our operations. Feedback from staff and customers is welcomed as part of this process. By working together, we aim to maintain a safe and professional removal service for everyone involved.
